World building is very useful guide in creating your world in the story that you’re writing. As a matter of fact, this is the very essence and at the same time, foundation of a good science fiction or fantasy story as well as other genres. Well thought world building can help in adding richness to the writing while providing valuable information to your readers, which makes them feel more attached to the plot and characters. This then raises the question of how the writers must carry on in their world building? In order to become more aware of this, we will split it into three major points which is imaginary worlds, alternate reality and actual locations.
With the imaginary worlds, the construction of the whole fictional universes is found mainly in fantasy genres wherein alternate reality, it is re-imagining the details of our present world which is actually popular to writers whose focus is mostly in science fiction and last but not the least, actual locations or the invocation of real place of our world that’s used in novels without adding any fantasy elements.
Creating an imaginary world is one of the most challenging and daunting types of world-building. Most of the times, it is used in science fiction and fantasy in which the writer is conjuring the details of his/her world from ground up including the geography, lore, language, history, characters, politics, religion and social customs.
It is understandable that the thought of creating all of these elements in forming the entire fictional world could be daunting and stressful and deciding where to begin with the story is nearly impossible. If you want some inspiration, you can look at some of the universes built by famous authors such as J.R.R Tolkien, J.K. Rowling and many other great writers/authors.
Obviously, not all writers have the ability or capacity to create a functional and fictional language but budding world builders could still follow the prior authors as a start. A good place to start in building your world is pinpointing one aspect of the imaginary world that you are most fond. It is best that you focus on this element as it will help you in building your story and world from there.
After you get the hang of it, you have to start working out on the details that will convince people and remain consistent in your imaginary world. One way of doing this is by asking a set of question related to different elements of your world. Think of it like you sharing info on a person who doesn’t know anything about your country or home and you explain it to them in a way they will have vision of it.
